Actually, yes, but it’s a one-time thing.

Our friends at the 9:20 Special are having an Open House, and everyone’s invited!

One of San Francisco’s longest-running night swing dance venue, the 9:20 Special opens its doors to welcome back old friends, thank friends who’ve supported us over the years, and reach out to make new friends with a big Open House Party featuring:

* Free crash course beginner swing lesson
* Music to swing DJs Jesse Miner, Jeremy Lewis & Manu Smith
* Special performances featuring local, regional and national lindy hop champions
* A night full of great social dancing in our big and beautiful ballroom!

And the whole thing is FREE! No cover, no class charges, nothing - FREE!

Isn’t that a novel idea? ;-)

Actually, it’s awesome that they’re doing this, and you should all check it out, especially if you’ve only come out to Lindy in the Park.

January 22nd, 2007 · No Comments

In other news, the NCLS, in cooperation with Ashkenaz, the Doghouse, and Lake Merritt Dance Center, is pleased to announce the return of Frankie Manning to the Bay Area for a weekend workshop. Feb 16-18, 2007.

All of us here at LitP agree that Frankie is one of the main reasons for the revival of Lindy Hop.

You owe it to yourself to come hear and see this living legend (he’s in his 90’s!).

Barbara Morrison Live at the 9:20 Special

January 1st, 2007 · No Comments

Barbara Morrison Live at the 9:20 Special Jazz/Essential. This is a must have for any modern-day Lindy Hopper and Jazz fan. Barbara has an incredible voice as well as personality and spunk, and that certainly shows in this live recording session at one of San Francisco’s most popular swing dance venue, the 9:20 Special. If you had been there in May 2002, at one point you would have seen people stop dancing just to watch and listen to her sing. Every track in this collection is danceable. I should know, cause I was privileged to be there!

Song list:

1. Introduction
2. I Love Being Here With You
3. Never Make Your Move Too Soon / Smack Dab In the Middle
4. Don’t Get Around Much Anymore
5. Stormy Monday
6. Fever
7. Alright, Ok, You Win / Everyday (I Have the Blues)
8. The Comeback
9. It Don’t Mean A Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)
10. Going to Chicago
11. Next Time You See Me
12. Hit The Road Jack
13. Bye Bye Blackbird
14. Kansas City / Shake Rattle and Roll

Live in Swing City - Swingin’ With Duke

January 1st, 2007 · No Comments

Live in Swing City - Swingin’ With Duke - Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. An Essential. Favorites include Happy Go-Lucky Local, C-Jam Blues, Bli-Blip, and the lesser known, but equally good Black and Tan Fantasy. This album might be the exception in the Essentials group of cds where I stated 75% of the tracks are danceble. Who knows? YOU might be able to dance to most of them. In any case, at least half the tracks are danceable, and what tracks they are. Highest recommendation.

Song list:

1. Happy Go Lucky
2. Main Stem
3. C Jam Blues
4. Multi Colored Blue
5. Chinoiserie
6. Black & Tan Fantasy
7. Cottontail
8. Mood Indigo
9. Bli-Blip
10. Harlem Air Shaft
11. Portrait Of Louis Armstrong
