Marnee Thai

Dancers get VERY hungry after 3 hours pounding the pavement. On March 18, we cruise into the Sunset for Thai food.

Marnee is one of those hole-in-the-wall restaurants common to the Inner Sunset. Located between 21st and 22nd Avenue on Irving, Marnee doesn't stand out. But they are willing to seat our 11-person party, with a service charge.

We cram together in the back at one long set of tables pushed together. Since there is no easy way to share food lengthwise, we decide to share on a table-by-table basis. My table orders appetizers and rapidly becomes the envy of the others. Still hungry, they watch as we devour an awesome plate of fishcakes (with a nice cucumber vinegar dressing on the side) and a mediocre plate of vegetarian egg rolls. French's mustard on eggrolls? We're hungry enough to eat them, but it seems the wrong choice of a sauce.

Next, the drinks appear. We get Thai iced tea with tapioca and without, Thai iced coffee, lemonade, and the sweet longum drink. They also provide us with 2 pitchers of water, and constantly refill them.

The main dishes arrive in rapid succession. Be sure to specify how hot you want your dishes, or they will not be truly spicy. Try the roasted eggplant (#65) or the pork (#19). Many of the dishes did not stand out, but all tasted good. We could have used more rice, and the rice noodles stuck together.

The extra chicken dish they sent us was a nice gesture, but nothing special.

Service: Three stars. They rapidly changed $20 dollar bills for us, when we needed to divvy up the bill.

Food: One and one-half stars. Not very memorable.

Price: $14.50 per person. When you're eating in a large party, be prepared to compensate for others' appetites.

Atmosphere: Pleasant, but over-crowded. The company will always make a meal memorable.

And stay tuned to the next great documentary from Watanabe Productions, "Crouching Leader, Hidden Follow," coming soon to a website near you. - Naomi Walenta, March 2001

A Rebuttal by Ping Chen

It's a shame that Naomi gave such a bad review to Marnee Thai. I can only think the reason for this is because she was sitting at the wrong table. You will have to join our table next time. Our end of the table had some wonderful dishes.

We ordered the tasty green papaya salad, the curry beef, the spicy chicken wings that made it to the other table because they just had to have some.

Michelle was quoted as saying, "This is so good, the food just wakes up every taste bud you have"!

So, our table gives Marnee Thai three stars for food. The service was very good and we didn't mind paying a little over the standard 18% tip for a large party.

The restaurant is decorated to make you feel like you are dining somewhere in Thailand inside a thatched roof hut. What else can you ask for after a long day of dancing in the sun??? - Ping
